HCMC – Vietnam will have new supply of potassium fertilizer from 2014 when a plant invested by Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem) in Laos with an annual production output of 320,000 tons comes into operation.

According to Vietnam Chemicals Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the plant scheduled for completion in 2014 is part of the development plan of the fertilizer industry in the 2011-2015 period.

A representative of Vinachem said the potassium fertilizer plant was located in a complex of exploiting and producing potassium salt in Laos.

During the visit of State President Truong Tan Sang to the country last week, Vinachem signed a cooperation agreement with Laos’ Ministry of Planning and Investment to exploit and produce potassium salt which will be used as material for the fertilizer plant with an investment of US$450 million.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam has to import 100% of potassium fertilizer needed for the agricultural production, with 612,000 tons in 2009, 900,000 tons in 2010 and 920,000 tons in 2011.

The import volume of potassium fertilizer this year is estimated at around 920,000 tons while the total import volume of fertilizers of all types will be 2.6 million tons. The plant in Laos will help Vietnam have a stable fertilizer supply for the local demand.
