Police in HCM City will join hands to stop illegal street racing by motorbikes during the Traffic Safety Campaign next month, the city People's Committee said.
Penalties, including heavy fines, will be slapped on illegal racers to put a stop to the evil which is becoming more frequent in the city.
This year the number of races has topped 130,100 more than in the same period last year, with most of them being organised at night, the police said.
Races in Districts 5, Binh Thanh, and Phu Nhuan attract at least 500 racers and cause chaos on the streets.
More than 50 percent of the racers are aged under 20.
