Pham Thi Lai, 52, who stripped down with her daughter to stop workers from building on their former land, has been fined, Can Tho City police announced yesterday.

Lai, whose husband previously protested by swallowing insecticide in a failed suicide attempt, will have to pay VND1.58 million (US$75.4).
She and her daughter, Ho Nguyen Thuy, 33, took off their clothes in May before a group of security guards dragged them away.
The family complained they did not receive enough compensation when the government seized their land by force in December. The Construction Joint Stock Company No. 8 is using the property for a local residential project.
Police said Lai’s crime violated the country’s norms, fining her VND80,000 ($3.8) for the nudity and VND1.5 million ($71.5) for obstructing the contractor, which was building the Hung Phu Residential Project in Hung Thanh Commune, Cai Rang District.
They also fined the Western Security Service Company VND350,000 ($16.7) for the untrained security guards’ treatment of the women.
The construction company offered Lai’s family nearly VND300 million ($14,300) in 2005, but they refused even when the figure was raised to VND1.2 billion ($57,200) in 2010.
The Can Tho City People’s Committee announced the project in 2003.
