After a night’s socializing in downtown Saigon there are a number of options which revelers have if they fancy a late bite to eat.
I have myself been prone to the munchies after a beer or two too many but I have found the best place to sober up, if that is what you are after, or let the night continue is at Phuong Cua just behind Ben Thanh Market in District 1.
The food is absolutely delicious and is always served pretty sharpish and when washed down with a few beers it really hits the spot. The outside tables ensure you can take in the atmosphere of the city at night whilst enjoying some banter with your company. In fact the restaurant takes up half the street as it seems to have tables everywhere and it is always bustling with energy and happy patrons.
Aha the food. Well the chicken cooked in salt and chili is a must as is the beef. Another good option is barbeque squid and of course the eaterie’s name suggests that crab is its specialty. Tiet canh cua (crab blood), cua rang muoi Hong Kong (salted crab Hong Kong style), ech rang muoi Hong Kong (salted frog Hong Kong style) and all your usual hotpot favorites.
Director Nguyen Ngoc Minh Phuong moved his restaurant Phuong Cua from 13A Phan Van Tri Street where he set up shop for two years. The eaterie is opened from 3 p.m. until 5 a.m. so is perfect for a late evening or early morning feed.
Phuong, who opened the restaurant 15 months ago, said: “We attract locals, visitors and expatriates alike and also have a number of celebrities who often come along for some food and a chat.”
Phuong Cua restaurant is located at 228 Ly Tu Trong Street, Ben Thanh Ward in District 1, tel: 08 6657 5757.
