PepsiCo Vietnam last week joined hands with the Saigon Times Foundation (STF) under the Saigon Times Group to present 17 secondhand computers to 14 remote schools in the Central Highlands province of Kontum.

The donations were part of a project organized by STF and Thoi bao Vi tinh Sai Gon, an ICT publication of the Saigon Times Group to collect used computers for schools in out-of-the-way areas.

These are meaningful gifts for school children in Kontum in the new year, said Tran Hong Thai, chairman of Kontum Province’s Learning Encouragement Society. “Computer science is a normal subject at schools in other parts of the country but for school children in remote areas in Kontum and the Central Highlands as a whole, it’s totally unfamiliar.”

In addition to Kontum, PepsiCo Vietnam and STF transferred 33 used computers to Hoa Hiep and Binh Chau junior high schools in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Phong Dien junior high in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue.

This was the second time the beverages producer had joined the secondhand-PC-for-school project. In 2010, PepsiCo granted 52 used computers to remote schools in the central provinces of Quang Nam and Phu Yen.

Those individuals and organizations wishing to donate used PCs to the project are advised to contact Ms. Ngoc Xuan on 0918 346 919 or email her to ngocxuan@thesaigontimes.vn .
