Party leader reaffirms strong Vietnam-Cuba ties

Mr Trong made the statement during talks in Havana on April 9 (local time) with Raul Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, and President of the Council of State and President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba. so

The Party, State and people of Vietnam bear in mind the fine sentiments, valuable assistance and wholehearted support given by the Cuban leaders and people to the Southeast Asian nation’s past struggle for national liberation as well as the present cause of national construction and defence, he said.

He congratulated Cuba on its development achievements in recent times and firmly believed that under the sound leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba, the Latin American nation will realise the resolutions adopted at its 6 th National Party Congress.

Both host and guest expressed elation at the fine development of the two Parties and States over the years and agreed to increase the exchange of high-level contacts and visits to share experience, especially in State and socio-economic management.

They placed great emphasis on the importance of Party building and personnel training, as well as renewing the socialist construction in each country, and agreed to reciprocally organise theoretical workshops on issues of mutual concern between the two Parties.

Stronger cooperation

The two leaders also stressed the need to expand bilateral cooperation in economics, trade and investment on a par with the political relations and great potential of Vietnam and Cuba.

They agreed to facilitate the operation of the Vietnam-Cuba Inter-governmental Committee to seek appropriate modes and areas of cooperation in line with their countries’ specific conditions, so as to beef up bilateral economic and trade cooperation in an efficient and sustainable manner.

They vowed to create the best possible conditions for their business communities and localities to promote investment cooperation by fully tapping into each country’s potential.

Exchanging views on regional and international issues, the two leaders highlighted recent positive developments of the left movement in Latin America, creating a favourable environment for revolutionary forces in the struggle for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress around the globe.

They confirmed the existence and superiority of socialism in achieving the goal of human-centred sustainable development in the context of global financial and economic slowdown, social instability and challenges such as hunger and poverty, epidemics, climate change, and environmental degradation.

They held that Vietnam and Cuba need to increase cooperation and mutual support at international forums of which both countries are members, especially the United Nations.

Party leader Trong invited President Raul Castro to visit Vietnam again at an appropriate time and the invitation was accepted with pleasure.

Honoured with Jose Marti Order

Shortly after that President Raul Castro presented the Order of Jose Marti, the highest distinction of the Cuban Party and State, to Party General Secretary Trong in recognition of his contribution to strengthening the friendly relations and solidarity between the two Parties, States and peoples.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr Trong expressed his great honour to receive the Order, saying this demonstrates a vivid manifestation of solidarity, friendship and loyal and close-knit relationship between the two Parties, States and peoples.

Rarely have we seen such a special relationship like that between Vietnam and Cuba in modern history, he stressed.

He said the two nations have stood shoulder to shoulder in the past struggle for national independence and freedom and the present cause of socialist construction and national defence.

Such a relationship has become the symbol of time and an invaluable asset that both nations need to maintain, develop and pass down to younger generations, said the Vietnamese Party leader.

He reaffirmed the Vietnamese people’s determination to stand side by side with the Cuban people to promote the friendship, solidarity, loyalty, mutual trust and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba in order to serve the revolutionary cause and interests of the two nations’ and for peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the rest of the world.

Late in the afternoon, Party leader Trong laid a wreath at Jose Marti Monument, the national hero and great ideologist of Cuba, who first laid a firm foundation for the Vietnam-Cuba friendship.

A banquet was held in the evening by the Cuban Communist Party Central Committee, the Council of the State and the Council of Ministers in honour of Mr Trong and his entourage.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong began an official visit to Cuba on April 8. After Cuba, he will make a visit to Brazil at the invitation of President Dilma Rousseff.
