In all revolutionary stages, the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) has always played an important role in consolidating and upholding the strength of national unity, said Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Addressing the third conference of the VFF Central Committee in Ha Noi yesterday, the Party leader said the VFF has gathered and united people of different backgrounds, strata, ethnic groups and religions, as well as overseas Vietnamese.

Trong, who doubles as National Assembly Chairman, stressed that history proved that unity was extremely important. A solidified nation helped take the Vietnamese revolution from victory to victory, giving life to President Ho Chi Minh's words: "Unity, unity, great unity; success, success, great success."

Based on 20 years of implementing the political programme for national construction toward socialism, 25 years of carrying out the renewal process and 10 years of performing the 2001-10 socio-economic development strategy, the 11th National Party Congress emphasised the importance of strengthening national solidarity, enhancing unity and unanimity within the Party, building international solidarity and also stressed Viet Nam's willingness to be a friend and a reliable partner to all nations and international organisations for peace, co-operation and development.

While praising the VFF's enormous contributions to the success of the 11th National Party Congress, Trong expressed his hope that the organisation would continue to bring the Congress's Resolution to fruition first by taking part in organising the elections of the National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2011-16 term.

"This year marks the first time the elections will be held on the same day, requiring a high level of unanimity and great societal determination," the Party leader said.

Trong went on to say that the Front represented the people's aspirations and constituted the political foundation of the Party and State. It was a bridge between the Party, State and people, a symbol of national unity, and a key force in the patriotic emulation movements. Hence, it was essential to fortify the Front and make sure it meets new requirements with higher quality and efficiency, he added.

The Front should improve its co-ordination with other organs in the political system and increase diplomacy in order to contribute to the Party and State's foreign affairs and serve the country's national construction and defence, he said.

The conference decided that the VFF's action plan to implement the 11th National Party Congress's Resolution would focus on disseminating the Resolution to people at all levels and affirming the VFF's critical role in strengthening national unity. — VNS
