Police in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau are looking for a person who has allegedly tried to blackmail several local officials, asking them to repay debts to another official.

An officer from the provincial police department’s internal security division (PA83) told Thanh Nien that the person texted many officials, including leaders of the departments of education, information and communication, and industry and trade, with threats.

The targeted officials were asked to pay debts to Tran Van Ninh, an official of Ba Ria – Vung Tau’s Department of Finance.

When they called the person back, they were cursed with rude words, the officer said, adding that the person kept changing his phone numbers.

A deputy director of the Department of Finance, for example, received nearly 50 messages with rude words within a couple of days, he said.

Meanwhile, a senior official with the provincial Department of Information – Communication, who wished to remain unnamed, told Thanh Nien that he had received six text messages with threats for over the past three days.

He said he called Ninh, whose phone number was mentioned in the messages, but the latter said he had no idea about the person and that he had asked the police to intervene.

According to PA83, their investigations so far have found Ninh had no involvement in the case, and the person has also claimed that he is acting on behalf of several other local officials.
