Officials caught gambling in central Vietnam

Police in the central province of Ha Tinh Thursday arrested four officials from the provincial transport department after catching them gambling that same day.

Nguyen Tran, 58, vice director of Ha Tinh Department of Transport, was caught red-handed gambling with three others at the office of Tran Phi Duoc, 58, director of the department’s Transport Works Management and Construction Joint-stock Company.

Two other alleged gamblers were Nguyen Van Su, 47, chief of the department’s traffic control office, and Tran Nam Long, 45, deputy chief of the department‘s planning office.

According to police, they also confiscated nearly VND10 million (US$475) on the site.

Police are investigating the case.

Gambling is illegal in Vietnam. Those convicted face two to seven years in prison according to the second clause of Penal Code Article 248.

Early this week a court in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang handed jail terms to three former officials, including a former vice director of the provincial transport department, for gambling billions of dong on Chinese chess games.
