Riot police evicted anti-capitalist protesters and removed their tents from the courtyard of St Paul's Cathedral in London on Tuesday.

The operation began since midnight, following a UK high court order last week.

Bailiffs began enforcing a High Court order for the removal of tents and equipment outside St Paul's Cathedral at midnight Monday, according to a statement by the City of London Police

The Occupy London camp at St Paul's Cathedral, which campaigns against corporate greed, was set up last year in October. The campaigners were refused permission to appeal against the High Court decision.

"We regret that it has come to this but the High Court judgment speaks for itself and the Court of Appeal has confirmed that judgment," the City of London said in a statement.

"We would ask protesters to move on peaceably," it added.

Several arrests were made by the police during the eviction. Some protesters in the square outside the cathedral said their action was far from over.
