North European music hits capital

(VOV) - A concert of Scandinavian music will be performed this week by the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) with guest artists from Japan.

The VNSO’s subscription concert will feature master pieces of Danish composer Carl Nielsen and Finnish composer Jean Siberius.

Performing with the VNSO for the first time, the Japanese conductor Yasuo Shinozaki and violinist Takagi Kazuhiro will play Aladdin Suite, Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 2.

Written in 1919 by Carl Nielsen, Aladdin Suite has all the gestures that later came to be associated, via movie soundtracks, with music from the Middle East, including the most popular section, The Marketplace at Ispahan.

Finland’s Jean Sibelius is perhaps the most important composer associated with music that celebrates his country, as well as one of the most influential, in the development of the symphony and symphonic poem.

Conductor Yasuo Shinozaki has acquired a truly international reputation for his emotionally direct style of music making and his musical knowledge. He first emerged on the international scene in Finland, winning the Second International Sibelius Conducting Competition in 2000.

Violinist Kazuhiro Takagi has been very widely recognized in Japan, winning the National Arts Festival’s New Artist Award, the Osaka Cultural Festival’s Grand Prize in 2005 and the Recorded Work Award at the 19 th Music Pen Club Japan in 2007.

In recent years he performs well beyond the boundaries of his original music career as a violinist of A Hundred Birds Orchestra, while making new waves in the Japanese music arena.

As an active soloist, he has played with a number of domestic and overseas orchestras including Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and Wuerttembergische Philfarmonie Reutlingen in Germany.

The two-night concert will start at the Hanoi Opera House at 8pm on March 23 and 24.
