Finally it is here folks, the one you have been waiting for. The most anticipated movie of the year……… The Dark Knight Rises.
The horrific news about the shooting deaths in America at the premiere in Colorado aside, this is the big one and a fitting finale to director Christopher Nolan’s British-dominated Batman trilogy.
Nolan and the man himself Christian Bale brought the Dark Knight back to credibility after the comic book style nonsense from Val Kilmer and George Clooney.
The DC Comics book star finally got the team he deserved and with Batman Begins the world sat up and took notice. The key to this trilogy’s success is the continuation of the main characters and with three out of the four main men coming from the top tier of the British acting fraternity - Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Morgan Freeman (Fox), Michael Caine (Alfred) and Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon).
In the second installment ‘Dark Knight’ Gordon’s final quote was chillingly prophetic as he said Batman was the ‘hero Gotham City deserves but not what it needs right now so he is hunted down because he is the silent guardian and the watchful protector’. Fast forward to Gotham now and with the death of lawyer Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman takes the full responsibility for Dent’s crimes and is therefore chased down by the Gotham City establishment and law enforcement.
However, Gotham needs him whether they like it or not and the city’s new threat comes in the shape of a character whose background in prison which shaped him is similar to anti-hero Edmond Dantes from Alexandre Dumas’ Count of Monte Cristo. Bane (played by yet another Brit actor Tom Hardy), though, is not after revenge on his enemies like Dantes, he wants the whole of Gotham to suffer and the much-hated silent guardian is needed now more than ever from a city that has made him public enemy number one.
Bane now leads the League of Shadows (from Batman Begins) and there are cameo appearances from Irish duo Cillian Murphy and Liam Neeson as London-born Nolan bids to go out in star-studded style; in fact we are struggling to find any U.S. actors in this one people.
The adorable and gorgeous girl-next-door Anne Hathaway is the leading lady this time as Selina Kyle whose antics as a cat burglar sets in motion a sequence of events which leads to Batman taking on Bane and the League of Shadows head to head in the epic battle of all battles.
You can’t miss this one; check out your local cinema from Friday.
