No state funding for skateboarding team

VietNamNet Bridge – The national skateboarding team will have to cover all expenses at the upcoming SEA Games.

It is good news for the team that the Indonesian Skateboarding Federation will provide each skateboarder with $50 a day. However, team-members are seeking traveling funds. In the worst case, the team will reduce its members from five to three.

The team was established in April 2011, with five members – Vo Trong Dung, Tran Thanh Binh, Nguyen Van An, Nguyen Duc Manh and Tran Manh Tu, who come from Patin Iskate Club.

Among sports teams to SEA Games 2011, the skateboarding team is the representative of community sports, with street skateboarders.

The team’s leader is coach Le Quan, who is also chairman of the Patin Iskate club. Quan studied skateboarding and got a coaching certificate in Singapore himself. Returning to Vietnam, he opened the Patin Iskate Club, which has close relations with the Singaporean Skateboarding Federation (SKF).

The federation presented the club professional skateboarding shoes that cost $1,200/pair and recently sent former world champion Bill Begg from New Zealand to Vietnam to teach the national team for a week.

To prepare for SEA Games, the team practiced on concrete grounds, which are below standards since Vietnam does not have race tracks for skateboarding.

The five Vietnamese skateboarders will compete at 10,000m, 5,000, 1,500m, 500m, 300m, and 3,000m for group.
