Vietnamese weightlifter Tran Le Quoc Toan failed to win a medal in the 56kg category at the Olympics, finishing fourth on Sunday.
Toan and 10 other athletes were in Group A designated for weightlifters who registered the highest weights.
However, Om Yun Chol of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, competing in Group B lifted a total of 293kg on Saturday. Chol’s result exerted heavy pressure on the athletes in Group A.
Actually, the fight for the medals was just among Toan, Wu Jingbiao of China and Hristov Valentin from Azerbaijan.
The Chinese lifted a total 289kg (133kg from the snatch and 156kg from the clean and jerk); and the Azerbaijani lifted a total 286kg (127kg from the snatch and 159kg from the clean and jerk).
Toan lifted a total 284kg. He lifted 159kg in the clean and jerk but could only lift 125kg in the snatch and finished behind bronze medalist Azerbaijaini.
Though he did not win a medal, Toan’s performance was his personal best, his previous best at official events being 280kg.
