Ninh Binh fires former coach of national squad

In November 2009, Edson Tavares, twice chief coach of the national football squad, agreed to work for Ninh Binh for three years. Vissai Ninh Binh, the First Division Tournament champions 2009, will take part in the V-League 2010.

Coach Tavares. VietNamNet Bridge – Ninh Binh football club has dismissed its coach, Edson Tavares, after a little over one month.

Ninh Binh agreed to pay Tavares $10,000 a month, the same pay as the current coach of the national team, Henrique Calisto. Ninh Binh’s deal with Tavares was a surprise because this club’s coach, Nguyen Van Sy, was very successful.

In its contract with Tavares, Ninh Binh added a clause that if Tavares fails to bring Ninh Binh to the top three teams at V-League 2010, he would lose the position.

However, after over one month, this Brazilian coach didn’t impress Ninh Binh club’s officials and players. The club’s officials and footballers complained that Tavares didn’t work enthusiastically and discouraged players with his bad comments about the team.

“He guided us cursorily and unscientifically,” an anonymous player commented. “He only asked the team do gentle exercises. With these exercises, we can play football for up to 45 minutes.”

Since he returned to Vietnam, the Brazilian coach also delivered speeches that vexed Ninh Binh. He said V-League didn’t move forward in the last five years and that Ninh Binh club is not good enough to play at the V-League level.

These speeches, according to Ninh Binh, has harmed the club’s image and discouraged its players.

Tavares also had unreasonable demands at Ninh Binh, such as a modern stadium, more convenient accommodations for players and requiring Ninh Binh to have at least six members of the national squad immediately.

In relations with players, Tavares is complained to be too closed. After drills, the coach often stayed in his room and didn’t see anyone. The coach complained several times that his spiritual life in Ninh Binh was very poor.

Because of these actions and speeches, Ninh Binh fired Tavares, saying that it doesn’t want the team’s situation to worsen since V-League 2010 will begin in one month.

Tavares worked with the national team in 1995. In 2004, he was dismissed after he disappointed fans when Vietnam was defeated in the qualifier round of the Tiger Cup. Before going to Ninh Binh, Tavares worked with a club in the Middle East.

Leaving Ninh Binh early, Tavares will not be compensated. A Ninh Binh representative revealed that they had anticipated problems with the coach’s personality so there was a clause in the contract allowing them to fire the coach without compensation. Tavares, however, will receive nearly $10,000 to buy an air ticket.

Ninh Binh has invited former national squad player Nguyen Hong Son to replace Tavares. Son has not replied, so the club has also extended a proposal to Le Thuy Hai.
