Vietnamese writer Nguyen Chi Trung was honored at the ASEAN Literature Award 2011 in Bangkok for his first novel Tieng khoc cua nang Ut (the crying sound of Ut), reports Sai Gon Giai Phong.

Awards were granted to entrants from Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore for short stories, novels and poems.

According to Trung, who is also an army general, Vietnam’s literature has contributed to the development of ASEAN for peace, friendship and

cooperation. Previously, Tieng khoc cua nang Ut was honored by the Vietnam Writers’ Association and Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense in 2010. The novel features the historical period from 1954 to 1959 in the build-up to the revolution war against U.S. imperial forces in the central region.

The ASEAN Literature Award, introduced in 1979 by the Thai Royal Family, aims to honor ASEAN’s popular writers and poets.
