Former students from south meet in Ha Noi

HA NOI The country s leaders and former teachers and students met yesterday in the capital city to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the first school for southern students in the north.

The schools were set up in the north of Viet Nam from 1954 to 1972 to train southern students in northern areas such as Hai Phong City and Thanh Hoa, Thai Binh and Ha Nam provinces. While the north of Viet Nam had gained independence in 1954, the south was still battling with the enemy.

The schools were designed to prepare future human resources for the south after liberation. National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong said "the schools were the result of a lucid policy demontrating the far-sighted strategic vision of the Party, State and President Ho Chi Minh."

The schools trained more than 30,000 students in 28 years including 15,000 who went on to university and postgraduate courses. Many of them are now high-ranking officials of the Party, Government and localities.

Deputy PM and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan said the students of the schools had contributed greatly to the country s unification, building and development, adding that the schools constituted a good example that even in a difficult situation, investment in education was important.

PM says destruction of old villas must stop

The conclusion also said that the municipal authorities must carry out research into the restoration of the Old Quarter in order to preserve its typical architectural characteristics. The restoration needs to ensure that requirements on construction, green spaces and traffic are met.
