New project launched to protect ethnic minority groups’ cultural identities

PANO – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held a press conference on August 18th in Hanoi to launch the project “Preserving and developing Vietnamese ethnic minorities’ cultural identities towards 2020” with total investment of more than VND 1.5 trillion.

The project is divided into two parts with the first one expecting to cost over VND 1 trillion.

Besides preserving the most dilapidated sites, the project focuses on capacity-building for local people so that they themselves could preserve their own traditional cultures which soon be on the edge of extinction. Priorities will be given to ethnic minority people in Northwestern, Southwestern regions and in the Central Highlands.

From now until 2015, the project will focus collecting indicators of ethnic groups’ cultural development towards 2020, conducting an inventory of their typical cultural heritages, providing training to ethnic people’s juniors so that they could undertake the protection and preservation work themselves.

The Prime Minister has empowered the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to cooperate with other relevant ministries and branches to appraise affiliated projects.
