New possibly invasive exotics announced

Piaractus Brachypomus

According to the new criteria issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, 20 more exotic species have been listed as possibly invasive.

They include 3 three invertebrate animal species: Crassostrea gigas, Procambarus clarkii, and Litopenaeus vannamei; 3 plant species, namely Java guva, giant ginger root, and Cinchona; and 14 fish varieties, including imported carp, Peacock cichlid, Prochilodus Lineatus Valenciennes, Piaractus Brachypomus and others.

Previously, the ministry had announced a list of 33 alien species that have been documented as invasive, said deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Bui Cach Tuyen.

The ministry said it yearly reviews and updates the list with new alien species that are found invasive or possibly invasive in Vietnam.
