Nhan Dan – Vietnamese designers need to find new and different materials for their products to catch consumer attention, especially as Vietnamese footwear has to compete with imports from China in both the domestic and export markets.

The workshop, entitled ‘The Culture and Creative ideas of Italia – Vietnam fashion Shoes, Accessories and Garments’, was organised by the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (LEFASO), the Hanoi Council of Fashion Designers and the Italian embassy in Hanoi.

Giorgio Gadina has over eight years of experience in footwear and leather product manufacturing. He works with many exotic materials, such as snake and lizard skin, which he collects on is many trips around the world.

At the workshop, Gadina introduced some leather and footwear products made from common materials in Vietnam including buffalo leather and coconut shells dyed in bright colours.

The Italian designer said that Vietnamese designers need to find new and different materials for their products to catch consumer attention, especially as Vietnamese footwear has to compete with imports from China in both the domestic and export markets.

He also stressed that aesthetic value and function should be considered when creating new products. Vietnamese designers and businesses need to study the market, consumers and demand, and the shoe industry should choose the best materials and develop the right products accordingly.

Held under the framework of the ‘2012 Italy – Vietnam Programme’, the workshop aims to promote co-operation, foster mutual understanding, and develop economic and trade ties between the two countries.
