The VNMDT was established in 1951 at the Viet Bac base as the Central People’s Art Troupe.

Over the course of its history, the theatre has made significant contributions to the cause for national liberation, construction and defence. The theatre’s prestige has continually improved through performances imbued with national identity that have won the hearts of millions both at home and abroad.

The theatre has also been home to hundreds of Professors, Associate Professors, People’s Teachers, and meritorious teachers, as well as People's Artists, Meritorious Artists and popular artists whose names and talents are well known and greatly appreciated by the public.

The theatre has boosted its reforms to meet increasing audience demands in line with the development of the arts in Vietnam. In addition to conducting research, giving performances and preserving national artistic traditions, the theatre has also produced imposing performances for the country’s significant celebrations and developed many programmes to appeal to a wider public audience.
