(VOV) - Non governmental organizations (NGOs) have provided nearly US$16 million and more than EUR58,000 for the southern province of Dong Nai over the past five years.
This figure was released at a conference on March 19 to review the operations of NGOs in the province from 2006 to 2011.
During the reviewed period, 67 social welfare and charitable projects were implemented, providing loans, free medical check-ups, treatment, and scholarships for poor people, building houses and schools, and protecting the environment.
The Dariu Foundation from Switzerland granted loans, presented scholarships and built schools for poor students in the mountain district of Tan Phu. The US Holt International Children’s Services supported orphans and Oxfam Solidarity Belgium helped immigrant workers in Long Binh ward, Bien Hoa city improve their legal and social welfare knowledge.
The World Bank also funded HIV/AIDS prevention projects, the Asian Development Bank provided money for a preventive medicine project, and the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation from the UK implemented a community sponsorship project.
All of these projects have improved the living conditions of orphans, people with disabilities and the poor in the province.
In the future, Dong Nai will encourage NGOs to focus on eight projects for social welfare, humanitarian aid, and education to help people living in difficult circumstances have a better life.
