A further 59 people tested positive for swine flu on August 24, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 2,073, of whom two have died, the Ministry of Health reported.
Of the victims, 1,217 have been discharged from hospital while 854 are still in quarantine and undergoing medical treatment. All are in stable condition.
More school students have contracted the flu, especially in Hanoi, where 14 students from Thach Ban Junior School and one from Thach Ban Primary School in Long Bien District are now sick.
A 12th grader from Dong Da High School was confirmed as the school’s second case.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health is closely monitoring outbreaks of swine flu in eight schools, namely Lam Son Junior and College of Transport in District 6, Nguyen Khuyen Private Senior in Tan Binh District, Quoc Van Sai Gon in Binh Thanh and Binh Tan Districts, Thanh Binh Senior in Tan Binh District, Junior Cu Chinh Lan in Tan Binh District, and Hoa Binh Private Senior in Tan Binh District.
A student at the Nha Trang College of Pedagogy was discovered to have swine flu on August 18 but by then he transmitted the virus to 11 others.
Mr. Vu Xuan Dong, the school’s deputy head, said the school would welcome over 700 new students on August 25-26 for the new academic year which begins on September 1.
But the school has since postponed the reopening to September 7.
