Mollusca sector to come out of its shell

The development of mollusca trading has taken a big step forward.

The integrated mollusca breeding development plan to 2020 has been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

The plan underlines the raising of key molluscas such as oysters, barnacles, arca and sweet snails in fit ecological areas to form integrated areas serving exports and domestic consumption.

Under the plan, the total area for raising molluscas will be 43,360 hectares by 2015, including 26,040ha for oysters, 700ha for sweet snails, 13,010ha for blood arcas, 2,630ha for barnacles and 980ha for the rest.

By 2020, the area will be increased to 55,130ha, of which 32,960ha for oysters, 840ha for sweet snails, 16,100ha for blood arcas, 3,870ha for barnacles and 1,360ha for the remainder.

The total output of key molluscas is targeted to fetch 437,940 tonnes by 2015. The figure by 2020 will be 583,950 tonnes. Export earnings from key molluscas will reach $440 million by 2015 and approximately $746 million by 2020.

Under the plan, developing the breeding of molluscas is divided in ecological areas. All economic sectors are encouraged to invest in breeding integrated goods molluscas, with incentives and preferential treatment available for big players.

Under the plan, all stages such as raising breeds, feeding, purchasing and processing molluscas will be under the food hygiene quality management system, ensuring Vietnamese mollusca products to have competitive advantages for sustainable market expansion.

The plan is also aimed to exploiting and preserving natural mollusca breeds, while creating breakthroughs in producing artificial high-yield mollusca breeds in order to serve the development of integrated goods mollusca breeding.

Salt-marsh lands and waters, tide waters, coastal alluvial grounds and waist of gulfs will be tapped to diversify modes of breeding molluscas with an aim to increasing the output and contributing to poverty reduction.
