Haiphong hosts National table tennis champs



10 male and 11 female table tennis players are competing at the 2011 National Table Tennis Championships, which opened in the northern port city of Haiphong on December 16.

They will play in round robin format to select the top three players for the men’s and women’s matches.

The winners will receive a cash prize of VND12 million, the first runners-up, VND10 million and the second runners-up, VND 7 million.

The tournament is being held with the aim of selecting the best players for the national squad.

Three players, Tran Tuan Quynh, Doan Kien Quoc, and Le Thi Phuong Dung are absent from the event due to international competition.

Vietnam’s top tennis player Do Minh Quan trounced defending champion Thanh Trung 7-5 in a tennis tournament for outstanding national players nationwide, which concluded in Danang city on December 15.

The third position at the week-long event was shared by Tran Thanh Hoang from the military and Ly Hoang Nam from Binh Duong province.

The VFM Cup tournament was attended by 24 players ranking from 9th to 16th in the national ratings.

New football club debuts in HCM City

Saigon FC, a new football club, made its debut in Ho Chi Minh City on December 12.

To prepare for the 2012 season the club has admitted many veteran players from the national squad, including Minh Duc, Phuoc Tu, Dinh Luat and Tan Truong as well as foreign footballers such as Huynh Kesley, Nguyen Rogerio and Antonio.

Saigon FC (formerly known as Saigon Xuan Thanh) has won the 2011 national football first division championships and is scheduled to play in the V-League next year.

It has a new logo and official anthem entitled Hanh Khuc Saigon FC (Saigon FC March) by Le Quang.

The club will have a television channel in the country’s major pay TV network providers including the VCTV, SCTV, HCTV and K+.

Saigon FC President Luu Quang Lam said there is a plan for long-term investment to make the club ever stronger.

He said his team has set the target of staying in the V-League top 3 right in the coming tournament.
