The Mekong Delta region has exported an additional 91,000 tonnes of rice, bringing the total rice exports so far this year to 6.1 million tonnes worth US$3.1 billion.
The figures reflect year-on-year increases of 7% in volume and 16% in value.
Asia remains the region’s largest rice importer with 63% of the volume, of which Indonesia and the Philippines alone brought 40% of the region’s total rice exports. Africa ranks second with 24%.
This year, Mekong Delta region harvested bumper rice crops of 23 million tonnes, up 1.5 million tonnes against last year, making up 55% of the country’s total rice output.
