Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday appointed Vladislav Surkov, the presidential administration's first deputy head, as a deputy prime minister in charge of the country's economic modernization.

Surkov, 47, has been responsible for domestic politics in the Kremlin administration.

Medvedev said he hoped Surkov would continue dealing with modernization issues, which he used to focus on as a member of Russia's modernization commission.

Surkov, in turn, thanked Medvedev for the appointment, saying his new job "is very interesting."

According to presidential spokesman Natalia Timakova, Surkov's post would be occupied by Vyacheslav Volodin, a deputy prime minister and the government's chief of staff.
