Master plan for cement to be revised

HCMC – The cement industry will revise its master plan to balance supply and demand and to sustain development in the coming years, said the Construction Ministry in a statement sent to provincial governments late last week.

The Ministry asked local governments and investors to report on cement projects as a basis for the new plan which will be submitted to the Prime Minister for approval by the end of this quarter.

This is the fourth time in 12 years the Government has had to revise the cement industry’s master plan because of rampant development of new plants and the increasing cement surplus.

Experts said that over 70% of cement projects in Vietnam were operating at a profit but were causing negative impacts on society and on the environment. In the roadmap to 2020, the Ministry asks cement plants to upgrade technology to protect the environment and save on resources and energy.
