A native of Nghe An central province has been charged with transporting moon bears in violation of regulations on protecting endangered wild animals, a local police source said on Sunday.

Previously, on June 29, police in Tam Dinh commune in Tuong Duong district caught Nguyen Van Chung, 25, transporting three moon bears (Ursus thibetanus) on a motorcycle.

The moon bears are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book of rare and threatened species.

The three mammals, one of which had lost a leg, are being well cared for at Nghe An-based Pu Mat National Park before being released back to the wild.
