The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) said Monday that Malaysia will compete in the Under-21 International Football Tournament to be held in the Central Highlands town of Pleiku in October.
The confirmation was made in a letter sent by FAM General Secretary Dato Azzuddin Bin Ahmad to the Vietnam Football Federation and the Thanh Nien newspaper, who organize the event.
This year marks the sixth edition of the Thanh Nien-sponsored U21 International Football Tournament. Malaysia has participated in five of them with their best achievement so far being a semifinal berth in 2010.
Malaysia’s youth teams have been very strong regional force in recent years. They won two consecutive South East Asian Games gold medals in 2009 and 2011. The SEA Games football championship is for U23 teams in the region.
