HCMC - More than one week after Vietnam’s private airlines had publicized their flight increases during April 30 and May 1 holiday, Vietnam Airlines on Tuesday announced its plan to operate 195 more services, mainly from HCMC and Hanoi to tourist destinations.

Vietnam Airlines will offer 77 more flights on Hanoi-Danang run, 56 more flights on HCMC-Danang route, and an additional four on Haiphong-Danang service from April 27 to May 2 to cash in on the extravagant fireworks competition in the central coastal city.

The national flag carrier will also add 31 flights from Hanoi and HCMC to Nha Trang, 21 to HCMC-Phu Quoc, four to Hanoi-Quang Binh, and two between Hanoi and the former imperial city of Hue. The additional services will be operated by Airbus A320 and A321 planes as well as ATR72 aircraft.

Vietnam Airlines estimated the additional flights would lead to a 16% rise in its seating capacity for the Reunification and May Day holidays compared to normal days and air travel demand during these special occasions would grow 10% over the same period last year.

Private carrier Air Mekong is pinning high hopes that travel on its flights to tourist destinations during the holiday would jump 30-40% as against normal days.

Truong Thanh Vu of Air Mekong told the Daily that the airline would perform over 40 extra flights from April 27 to May 2, with the focus on the routes linking Hanoi and HCMC to Phu Quoc, Con Dao and the Central Highlands city of Dalat.

Another private airline VietJetAir is planning to fly twice a day between HCMC and Danang and conduct eight flights on the HCMC-Hanoi instead of three daily from April 27. This low-cost carrier will start to service daily between Hanoi and Nha Trang from May 19.

On the international front, Vietnam Airlines will increase seating capacity and flight frequency towards airports in Asia, with four flights between HCMC and Bangkok, four between HCMC and Hong Kong, and six for the Hanoi-Siem Reap route.
