Japanese shares open higher after US gain

Japanese shares opened 0.46 per cent higher on Wednesday on improving confidence in technology stocks, thanks to solid earnings results from IBM and Apple that helped boost Wall Street.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange's Nikkei index added 48.90 points to 10,567.88 in the first minutes of trading.

The upswing came after strong US corporate earnings announcements cheered investors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 50.55 points, or 0.43 per cent, to 11,837.93, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite index added 10.55 points, or 0.38 per cent, to 2,765.85.

Apple Inc. weighed on the Nasdaq index after the company announced that chief executive Steve Jobs was taking another spell of medical leave.

But the company's robust earnings, thanks to strong sales of iPhones and iPads, outweighed the news about Jobs, Hideyuki Ishiguro, investment strategy supervisor at Okasan Securities, told Dow Jones Newswires.

Ishiguro said he expected the Nikkei index to move between 10,550-10,650 as investors shift to export-related issues, compared with Tuesday's close of 10,518.98.

In early Tokyo forex trade, the dollar bought 82.62 yen, up slightly from 82.55 yen in New York Tuesday.
