A Japanese business organization will offer Vietnamese workers one-year technical internships in Japan under a new agreement signed this week with the Vietnamese Government.
The Vietnamese interns will be trained at factories and companies who are members of the Association for International Manpower Development of Medium and Small Enterprises (IMM Japan).
Under the agreement signed on Wednesday by Vietnamese Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and IMM Japan President Kyoei Yanagisawa, the Japanese organization will cover the cost of training the Vietnamese interns in Japan.
IMM Japan will also give each apprentice US$2,000 on completion of the internship, Vietnam News Agency reported.
The apprenticeships will boost the skill level and productivity of the Vietnamese trainees, Ngan said.
Yanagisawa said the new one-year program offered training in a fewer number of occupations than a three-year training program for young Vietnamese workers also run by IMM Japan.
IMM Japan has agreed to train a total of 1,000 Vietnamese apprentices in 2009 and 2010.
Since January 2006, IMM Japan has been placing Vietnamese apprentices in three-year training programs.
In the past three years, IMM Japan has received 501 Vietnamese apprentices, 14 of whom completed their training in January this year.
According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over the past 12 years nearly 20,000 Vietnamese apprentices have traveled to Japan to learn various trades, mainly in the building and garment and textile sectors.
Since last year IMM Japan has been offering annual exchange programs, in cooperation with the Vietnamese Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, for Vietnamese high school students to visit Japan and take part in cultural and environmental activities.
The exchange program is designed to further improve the cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.
