That was the common remark of delegates at a technical cooperation workshop held by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) in Hanoi.
Being carried out from 2007 till 2011 with approximately 500 million yen from Japan ODA, the project aimed to further strengthen the capacity of the Institute of Environmental Technology (IET), the project implementing agency under VAST, on water environment analysis and waste water treatment technology.
JICA support enabled VAST/IET to own advance and modern technologies, knowledge and skills. Apart from the enhancement of equipment, VAST/IET staff also received technical guidance and training from Japanese experts.
“VAST/IET is a top organiser on scientific research and service on Environmental protection in Vietnam. It has shown that JICA supported VAST/IET not only modern equipment procurement but also capacity development,” said VAST president Chau Van Minh. JICA Vietnam senior representative Shimizu Akira expressed happiness at the positive results of the project.
“It was great to know VAST/IET is now a key partner of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s (MoNRE) Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA) in terms of environmental protection duties. It proved that IET is top at providing scientific and research service on the environmental issue in the country,” he said.
VAST/IET and JICA started the phase one of the same project in 2004. It gave more support and attention on enhancing the capacity of IET’s head office in Hanoi on water quality monitoring and analysis. Then, its results and activities were continued and extended by phase two.
