Veteran cyclist Bui Minh Thuy won the fifth stage of the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta Cycling Tour-An Giang Plant Protection Cup yesterday.

Dominating in strength and skills, Thuy, who cycles with the ADC-Vinh Long Television team, broke out of the pack in the last five kilometres of the 173km stage from the town of Vi Thanh in Hau Giang Province to the city of Can Tho, completing the stage in a time of 4hr 3min 31sec and at an average speed of 42.625km/h.
Luu Nguyen Thanh Nhan of Sai Gon Plant Protection 1 and Ha Thanh Tam of An Giang Plant Seeds came in second and third, respectively, while Ho Huynh Van An from An Giang Plant Protection 2 retained the yellow jersey with an overall time of 14:43:42 after five stages.
Truong Nguyen Thanh Nhan of Sai Gon Plant Protection 1 and Nguyen Truong Tai of Domesco Dong Thap filled out the top three in the overall standings.
An also performed outstandingly in the sprint competition yesterday, earning 62 points in the race for the green jersey, followed by veteran Le Van Duan from Sai Gon Plant Protection 1 and Dong Thap's Tai.
Sai Gon Plant Protection 1 remains in first place in the team standings after five stages with a combined time of 44:12.41, followed by An Giang Plant Protection 1 and Sai Gon Plant Protection 2.
Today, cyclists will pedal the 107km sixth stage from Can Tho City to Tra Vinh City.
The annual event attracts about 100 riders from 20 teams nationwide to compete in eight stages totalling 947km from An Giang Province to Vinh Long Province.
A total of US$12,000 will be awarded to the winners. — VNS
