More than 70 members of the Indonesian community and students gathered at the Indonesian consulate general in HCM City on Sunday to donate blood.

The consulate general said the humanitarian campaign, which collected 79.5 units of blood this time, was held for the fourth time in co-operation with the HCM City Red Cross Association and marked the 66th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence Day.

Consul General Bambang Tarsanto said the event was meant to enhance solidarity between Vietnamese and Indonesians.

This time the consulate general also held several cultural and social events like the Festival Indonesia Day, Indonesia Cultural Performance in Can Tho, and Festival Golden Rice 2011 in Soc Trang.

Elsewhere, more than 400 employees of American firms in HCM City and Binh Duong Province joined the rest of the world in donating blood on World Donors Day (June 14), to create an awareness of the role of blood transfusion in saving lives.

The campaign, held by the American Chamber of Commerce in Viet Nam, the Hospital of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, and Red Cross, collected 545 units of blood.

Every day approximately 1,300 units of blood are transfused in routine and emergency situations, but more than 3,000 are required. AmCham Viet Nam said the event would be held annually — VNS
