VGP – Hồ Chí Minh Road will run through 28 provinces and cities with the total length of 3,183 km, according to a newly-approved master plan on Hồ Chí Minh Road .
According to the master plan, Hồ Chí Minh Road will have the one end in Pắc Bó in northern Cao Bằng province and the other end at Đất Mũi in southernmost Cà Mau province.

The 28 localities where the road will go through include Cao Bằng, Bắc Kạn, Thái Nguyên, Tuyên Quang, Phú Thọ, Hà Nội city, Hòa Bình (the North), Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An, Hà Tĩnh, Quảng Bình, Quảng Trị, Thừa Thiên Huế, Đà Nẵng, Quảng Nam (the Central), Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Đắk Lắk, Đắk Nông (the Central Highlands), Bình Phước, Bình Dương, Tây Ninh, Long An, Đồng Tháp, Cần Thơ, Kiên Giang, Bạc Liêu và Cà Mau (the South).
Relevant ministries and agencies are required to adjust their ongoing and new planning projects to conform with the master plan to meet transport demand and serve socio-economic development in the country.
Construction of the road is under the second phase, which started in 2007 and will be completed in 2015.
In the third phase (2012-2020) around 445-km highway will be constructed with a total investment of VND 273,167 billion./.
