A hippopotamus has given birth to a 25kg baby at Dai Nam tourist area based in Binh Duong central province, the director Duong Thanh Phi said on Tuesday.

The baby was born at dawn of July 7 after the keepers noticed the mother had shown loss of appetite which indicated that she was going to give birth.
The large female mammal began breastfeeding her baby and both are very well, said Phi, adding the latter is now able to wade in the water and eat by himself.
The couple, the newborn hippopotamus’s parents, with a total weight of 3.5 tones were purchased from a zoo in Israel at a cost of EUR34,000 (US$42,114) three years ago.
