The Hanoi Department of Transport plans to unveil the first three walkways around the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Ba Dinh Square from May 19th, if the City People’s Committee approves the project.
Accordingly, streets of Chua Mot Cot (from Ba Huyen Thanh Quan to Ong Ich Khiem streets), Ong Ich Khiem (Ong Ich Khiem-Chua Mot Cot Streets) and Hung Vuong Avenue (Le Hong Phong-Ba Dinh Square area) will be turned to round-the-clock walkways for trial purposes.
Once operational, all vehicles will be banned from entering these streets. As for organisations, offices and individuals who are working and living in the areas, the local authorities will give them special badges for their vehicles, which hence forward will only be allowed to proceed at speeds under 15km/h.
Previously, in 2004, Hanoi opened four walkways in the Old Quarter during weekend evenings and it is planned to open six more in the near future.
