“Moi tinh thanh co” (A Love Story in the Ancient Capital), a ballet based on a folktale about the love between a prince and a princess of warring countries, will be staged at the Hanoi Opera House today and tomorrow.
According to the legend, Prince Trong Thuy was married off to My Chau, the princess of another country, to prevent a war. However, he is intent on destroying his wife’s country.
He succeeds but by then is in love with his wife. Feeling remorse for his act, he commits suicide. My Chau too kills herself soon.
But unlike the original, the ballet, directed by People’s Artist Pham Anh Phuong and choreographed by French Artist Bertrand D’At, has a happy ending.
Its cast includes Tri Thanh as Saint Kim Quy, Chi Thanh as King Trieu Da, Nhu Quynh as Princess My Chau, and Van Luong Tinh as Prince Trong Thuy.
The 90-minute play is being organized by the Vietnam Opera Ballet Theater and L’Espace (French culture center).
Tickets costing VND150,000 (US$7.5) to VND500,000 are available at No 1 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District.
