Hanoi spent around VND266 billion (US$106 million) on the 10-day fest to celebrate its 1,000th birthday anniversary last October, the municipal People’s Committee revealed Wednesday.

The number is VND84 billion less than estimated, deputy chairman of the Committee - the local government - Hoang Manh Tien said.

The money was spent on propaganda and artistic activities, protocols and gifts, he added.

But total monies relating to the birthday bash has yet to be revealed.

Hanoi authorities have yet to mention projects carried out before the millennium event like renovations of streets, government offices and houses across the capital.

The festival started in early October and peaked on October 10 with what officials describe as Vietnam's biggest-ever parade.
