The programme, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) with a total investment of US$31,000, aims to help disabled people in Hanoi between the ages of 16 and 50 obtain proper jobs.
The programme is carried out through the HEIC network linking physical rehabilitation centres and vocational training to help people with disabilities prepare for, find and maintain jobs in order to overcome financial hardships and reduce the State welfare burden.
Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, Nguyen The Hung, said there are nearly 90,000 disabled people in Hanoi and 10,000 have expressed a desire to access vocational training and employment, however, only a small number of the disabled have a permanent job. This programme aims to bridge the gap between the disabled, training institutions and enterprises to improve condition for disabled people and remove the social stigma associated with disabilities.
The programme will be implemented in Hanoi during 2012-2014 and then in other localities throughout the country.
