Most recently, the border guard forces of Ha Tinh discovered and retrieved 333 cubic meters of contraband timber in the Son Hong forest in Huong Khe District thanks to the mobilization of 100 soldiers of reconnaissance teams and local forest rangers.
Lieutenant Colonel Vo Trong Hai – Deputy commander of Ha Tinh Border Guard Command said, “The target is not only to bring hundreds of illegal timber logs out of the forest but also to uncover the tricks of forest hijackers to supply evidence for police investigation.”
“Among these contraband timber logs, some were chopped down last year; others have just been fallen recently. The headwater forests have been destroyed at an alarming rate, and Ha Tinh People’s Committee should assign a special force to directly handle this incident,” he added.
Now, the Son Hong forest, covering an area of over 17,000 hectares, is jointly managed by the Hong Linh Forest Protection Management Board, which belongs to the Huong Son Forestry and Service Company.
Despite the deforestation, Nguyen Huy Loi -- director of the Forest Protection Department, last year reported that, “his team found only approximately 30 cubic meters of contraband timber in Son Hong”.
Unconvinced by the report, provincial authorities decided to form another independent working group to recheck and uncover the large amount of illegal timber logs scattered elsewhere in the forest.
Now, Ha Tinh People’s Committee has blocked all forest entrance gates to begin the crackdown campaign.
“This is the worst forest destruction case in Ha Tinh. Huong Son Forestry and Service Company and the forest protection department were unacceptably irresponsible. Ha Tinh Province People’s Committee have dismissed some related officials,” said Vo Kim Cu, Chairman of the Ha Tinh Province People’s Committee.
