A market watch team and environmental police seized more than two tonnes of illegally imported chicken in Ha Noi's Thanh Xuan District this morning.

HA NOI – A market watch team and environmental police seized more than two tonnes of illegally imported chicken in Ha Noi's Thanh Xuan District this morning.

They found the smuggled chickens during an inspection of two vans on their way into the western district.

The vans had licence plates from Ha Noi and Bac Ninh Province.

Nguyen Dang Khoa, leader of Market Watch Team No 12, said the smuggled chickens were from China and had no certificate from the animal health agency.

Khoa also said the traffickers had transported the chickens at night to avoid being detected by relevant agencies. They planned to sell their chickens in the suburbs of Ha Noi such as Ha Dong and Thuong Tin Districts.

"We are working with a local veterinary station to destroy the smuggled chicken soon," the team leader said.

Khoa added that in order to strengthen food safety and hygiene standards, the market watch teams would increase inspections on food sold in both traditional markets and supermarkets in the capital city. – VNS
