Lead poisoning guidelines issued
The Ministry of Health has for the first time issued guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of lead poisoning in adults and children, according to Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, head of the ministry's Health Examination and Treatment Department.
The guidelines are a response to increasing instances of children being hospitalised with lead poisoning symptoms, especially in some localities where contaminated traditional medicines have been used.
The ministry recommends that people with lead poisoning at intermediate and high levels be hospitalised for treatment.
Apart from contaminated traditional medicines, people are exposed to lead from different sources, including contaminated air, food or juice stored in cans made with lead-based glazes, as well as toys with high lead content.
