HCM City will plant 1 million new saplings this year on 977ha of land in parks and streets, along canals and rivers, and in forests in the suburban district of Can Gio.
The city will use its own funds and money donated by organisations and individuals for the tree-planting programme.

Phu Yen fines polluting company
The People's Committee of central Phu Yen Province on Tuesday slapped a fine of VND100 million (US$4,800) on the Son Giang Metallurgy Company for violating environmental regulations.
The Chinese company caused environmental damage while mining iron ore in Tuy An District's An Dinh village. Authorities have also ordered the company to rehabilitate the area within 10 days.

HCM City to build four fly-overs
The HCM City People's Committee has approved plans by the Department of Transport to build two fly-overs for vehicles and two others for pedestrians on the Ha Noi Highway in front of the National University and Suoi Tien Park.
It said the Rach Chiec Bridge on the same highway would open to traffic next month, five months ahead of schedule. The 10-lane bridge has been built at a cost of more than VND1 trillion( US$48 million).

Con Co rescue station begins operations
A salvage and rescue station built on Con Co Island off central Quang Tri Province began functioning on Tuesday.
The provincial Border Guard Command spent more than VND68 billion ( US$3.2 million) to build the station, which has medical and search and rescue equipment besides houses and offices for troops stationed on Con Co.
