(VOV) - Tens of thousands of local residents and foreigners poured out into the streets and converged on the city centre on December 31 to celebrate the New Year.
Major roads and avenues such as Nguyen Hue, Le Duan, Dong Khoi, Le Loi and Ham Nghi were packed with revellers as early as 6pm to watch colourful lighting displays.
The square in front of the Sunwah Building was at centre stage where large crowds gathered, enjoying a special concert by local and foreign pop stars and waiting for the countdown.
“I am so excited by the festive atmosphere here,” said Vo Hoang Vu, who lives in district No8. “On New Year’s Eve, I am very proud of the achievements HCM City has made in 2011. The administration has organized various activities such as music performances and flower markets, to celebrate the New Year. I believe HCM City will continue to make headway towards rapid development in 2012.”
At the entrance of the Thu Thiem Tunnel, crowds of revellers shared happiness with each other when the clock struck twelve and spectacular fireworks went off.
“I came here very early to watch the fireworks displays,” said Dang Thi Ngoc Loi, who lives in Tan Binh district. “Everybody is very so happy today. I hope that 2012 will bring good luck and more success to every one.”
Joining the crowds were many foreigners who were curious about New Year celebrations in Vietnam. An American visitor said this was her first visit to Vietnam and she did not expect to find local residents celebrated the New Year holiday in such a jubilant and exciting way.
“It is unbelievable that I have had the chance to watch wonderful performances by renowned singer Aimi and DJ Emrah Is coming from Europe and guitarist Joy Basu from the US”, she said.
The festive atmosphere also heated up at the September 23 Park where traditional dishes of 25 countries and territories are on display at 150 food stalls. More than 50,000 people enjoyed the dishes and art performances since the park opened the door at 09.00am, according to the food festival organization board.
