The historic parade was ushered in after a torch was carried from Ho Chi Minh Museum at nearly 8.00am and set alight the Fire Podium in Ba Dinh Square, where top leaders of the country, representatives of apparatuses and organizations, and international friends gathered in the jubilant atmosphere, the Vietnam News Agency reports.

Prior to the parade, State President Nguyen Minh Triet delivered a speech, summarizing the establishment of the capital city 1,000 years ago, ups and downs of the city in its development, and the crucial role of Hanoi Capital as the heart of the country.

The parade was kicked off with the performance of ten helicopters over the Hanoi sky, pulling along the national flag and the Party flag, the festival banner as well as the great poster that reads “1,000 years of Thang Long-Hanoi.”
