HA NOI – The SEA Games' futsal (indoor football) event kicks off today with Vietnamese teams aiming to go all the way to the finals.
The favourites to win futsal gold are still Thailand, who have dominated regional futsal competitions for years.
Coach Sergio Gargelli, who is leading the Vietnamese men's team, says he is confident of his team reaching the finals, following their success at the Ha Noi Open tournament several months ago when Viet Nam ranked third behind Asian powerhouses Qatar and Uzbekistan.
"My players have shown great progress," says Gargelli. "If they can maintain a strong psychology during competition we will not be afraid of any rival."
Meanwhile the women's coach Truong Quoc Tuan says his players are also excited after successful training sessions.
The Vietnamese men will meet hosts Indonesia this afternoon in the opening match of group A.
The female players are to play Myanmar in the round robin format.
