The 5km Phu My Bridge Fun Run, supported by the German and Australian Consulates General and sponsored by the ANZ Bank, was an opportunity for participants to walk freely across the bridge and return before it was opened to traffic three days later.

VietNamNet Bridge – About 500 people, including expatriates, walked and jogged the length of Phu My Bridge, which links District 7 and 2, yesterday morning, September 6, just four days after its inauguration.

Participants were entertained before the start by the band Bad Neighbours. Various prizes including a Vespa LX150, went to section winners and participants, wearing the best fancy outfit.

Vu Thai Binh, 26, a staff member of insurer Bao Minh, said he was running with almost 100 of his colleagues.

"I was both running and enjoying the view," he said. "The bridge is really splendid and beautiful, I believe it's a highlight of the city's architecture."

District 2 resident Michael Gulden, who took part in the run with his wife and three young children, said he was out for some family fun.

"It's a new bridge, so we have something different running here," he said.

All proceeds, roughly estimated at VND400 million (US$22,000) went to the Viet Nam Fatherland Front and Loreto Viet Nam with a view to better life for disadvantaged people.
